She was much too busy constructing new layers
Over the brittle walls surrounding her heart
To notice him reach through a crack and snatch it away
Holding it protectively in his hands
Silently vowing never to let go...
Once realization hit, she feared the worst
Desperately, she begged and pleaded with him
To return that breakable piece of her to the fortress she had built
Instead, he merely smiled and pointed to the pulsing heart
Beating warmly against her palms...
She smiled up at him, unafraid of what was to come
For while fear had blinded her to the truth
Love granted her a new and deeper understanding
To the gentle protector standing in front of her
She had been holding his heart all along...
